How do you color mermaid scales?

Mermaid scales look best with a gradient from light at the top of the tail to dark toward the fin tips. Start by coloring all scales in a base color. Then, for each scale, shade the lower edge slightly darker, creating depth and the sense that the scales overlap. Leave a small highlight at the top of each scale. Once you've done this, add a light pass of metallic gel pen over everything for shimmer. This takes patience but the result is spectacular.

Print on cardstock if you're using wet media (markers, gel pens). Regular printer paper warps when you layer multiple products on it, and the texture degrades. Cardstock holds up beautifully.
